Damon Signs With Tigers

Damon finally decided to join the Tigers after many weeks of waiting. The deal is a one year contract of 8 million. Overall, I think that the contract is good, I was hoping a million or two less, but 8 million isnt too expensive for what we are getting. Damon will add a nice bat to the lineup, veteran experience especially in the outfield, and versitility being able to go LF, CF, and DH whenever the Tigers need him to. He will be able to move around in the order a bit too, which can sort out the Tigers having to place two rookies at the start of the lineup.

Redemption: Who Will Take 4th & 5th Spot?

This will be another year of redemption for serveral Detroit Tiger pitchers. Bonderman, Robertson, Willis, Galarraga, and even Zumuya are some of the pitchers who have to prove themselves this year. If not, they might lose there career in the majors, traded, or become a free agent. Four of the pitchers above are fighting for their spot on the Tigers pitching staff. Bonderman and Robertson have battled injuries the past couple of years and have lossed a spot on the starting rotation. Galarraga a couple years ago had an amazing debut and year, however he suffered a tough year last year and never seemed to have one good start except on opening week.  Willis who has been on disabled list for most of the past two years because of an anxiety disorder had one great start against the Texas Rangers last year. But just after that one great start and the thought he had redeemed himself, he landed himself back on the disabled list with the same problem just after two horrific starts. Let’s hope the Tigers will get there moneys worth out of Willis. Finally we have Joel Zumuya. Zumuya has battled some embarassing injuries the past couple years. To our amaze, he hasn’t lost his speed. Hopefully, if used wisely, Zumuya can stay healthy and be a vital 7th or 8th inning relieve pitcher.

We have all seen what these pitchers can do, and if all of them do their job this year, they can easily pitch the Tigers to the playoffs. With them, we would establish one of the most feared pitching staffs in the game. They might not be the biggest named pitchers but a lot is at stake for them, and hopefully this will make them push themselves to be their best.

Damon to Tigers?

Johnny Damon could land in Detroit. Damon could fit inside many clubs, but probably no club that is elite. With Detroit losing a couple stars, most people believe they are no longer an elite team. Damon going to the Tigers is probably the best fit and he is going to a club that still has poetintial to make the playoffs. I am going to look at the advantages and disadvantages with taking in Damon.

Advantages: Damon I believe is still a decent hitter and he brings in a veteran presence and experienced outfielder, who can help some of the new upcoming rookie outfielders. Damon can be flexible too, he will be able to move from DH to left field or to center field. Not to mention he can probably take the responsibility of moving up and down in the batting order.

Disadvantages: Damon is 36 years old and is losing more and more of his arm each year. I am sure he is still going to be able to field, at least just as well as Carlos Guillen. With so many rookie outfielders, there is really no reason to add Damon.

I think Damon is the right fit for Detroit if he is payed a fair price which is a 1 or 2 year contract of 5-7 million. There is always a chance he could be used as a trade for a team close to the playoffs that needs a good bench player. I think for a short term deal, Damon is going to be worth our money and we can always get it back from a trade or even find a younger player in return. Time will tell close to Spring Break.
